Steel Industry

Benzene vapors can result from coking operations in the steel industry. The production of steel involves a coke oven used to heat and convert coal to coke which is a hard substance made of carbon. During this process, the heating of the coal releases a coke oven gas containing benzene. Coke by-product plants then convert the coke oven gas to a liquid form of benzene.  In fact, coking operations are the second-greatest source of benzene, after petrochemical operations.
