What is PFAS and How Did It Get into the Water?
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are man-made chemicals used in many nonstick, stain resistant, and waterproof products. These chemicals are also used in the manufacturing of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF). AFFF is a firefighting agent used to control and extinguish Class B fuel fires at airports, military bases, and fire training centers.
The well water in homes near PTI Airport may have been contaminated when the firefighting foam used at the airport ran off into streams and contaminated the groundwater. The PFAS chemicals in AFFF are often referred to as “forever chemicals” because they do not easily break down and they are extremely water soluble, meaning they spread quickly in water. PFAS chemicals are toxic and have been linked to certain types of cancer when consumed.
What Should You Do?
If you live in Guilford County near the airport and your home has a well water system or if you received a letter from the County about water testing, you should consider contacting an attorney. Seeking the guidance of an attorney is important in these types of cases.
Lawsuits filed for PFAS contamination seek to recoup the costs associated with:
- Remediation for adequate drinking water, wastewater, or groundwater
- Past and future water contamination testing
- Decreases in property value
Residents affected by the water contamination in this area may participate in a lawsuit against the companies that manufactured the toxic substances that have leaked into the groundwater.
