Summer Associate Program
Every fall, Baron & Budd participates in on-campus interview programs within the state of Texas and also considers unsolicited resumes for summer associate positions. We then invite select students to office interviews and ultimately extend summer associate offers to the students who best fit our hiring criteria.
Summer Associate Program
Baron & Budd typically hires a number of summer associates to work in the Dallas office. We ask that our summer associates spend at least six weeks with us. That time period may be extended if circumstances permit.
Supervisors/Mentors
While at the firm, our summer associates are each assigned to a shareholder supervisor and an associate mentor. Supervisors assign and guide the summer associates through assignments, while mentors offer help with assignments as well as introduce our summer associates to attorneys at our firm through regular lunches and other social functions.
Assignments and Evaluations
The goal of our program is for our summer associates to experience, first-hand, what life as a Baron & Budd attorney is all about. While we feel it is important to assign research and writing projects to each summer associate, we strive to maintain a program in which the students can leave their desks and actually participate in current firm business alongside the attorneys. Our summer associates attend hearings, depositions, mediations and trials, and it is not uncommon for them to spend more time outside of the office than in it.
Summer associates are evaluated on their written work product, legal skills, motivation, dedication to our field of practice, maturity and judgment, and those personal qualities that demonstrate their potential contributions to the Baron & Budd team.
Following the summer associates' stay at our firm, every lawyer is given the opportunity to give input regarding the summer associates with whom they've had an opportunity to interact. Based upon those evaluations, the hiring shareholder then makes hiring recommendations to the other shareholders regarding offers for regular employment.
Compensation & Benefits
Summer associates are paid weekly salaries that are competitive with those paid by other major firms in the same city. We pay for reasonable transportation expenses to and from school and assist in arranging summer housing. Additionally, Baron & Budd's Dallas office offers paid parking for summer associates.
What Former Summer Associates Say About Our Program
"Baron & Budd was a great find. Not only did I get to experience several stages of litigation, it was all in the fight for environmental justice. Both professionally and personally, I had a rewarding time at Baron & Budd."
"The people, atmosphere and work are wonderful. It's like no other big law firm."
"I'm grateful for the opportunity to see the action up close and be included in such important litigation."
"I have had a wonderful time here. It is satisfying to know that not only are good deeds being done here, but they are being done efficiently. I am positive that my peers working at defense firms are not having half the experience I am having here."
"If I could take only one memory of my B&B experience, it would be the care and compassion with which this firm embraces the clients it serves."
"Baron & Budd has created an exceptional Summer Associate's program. The attorneys and staff are dedicated, the trials electrifying, and the environment incredibly fun. This experience proved invaluable to me."
"I was offered the chance to see what being a lawyer really can mean. I got to be part of the trial team on a month-long trial, head off to depositions at a moment's notice, and write the first draft of a brief on a constitutional issue. Most of all, I was exposed to the real reason why Baron & Budd exists: the people they represent. I'll never forget the elderly man dying of mesothelioma that I met in Detroit or the eight plaintiffs in Tyler, Texas, with whom I spent two weeks. It was the most eye-opening and invigorating work, and it reminded me every day of why I went to law school in the first place."
